Why do we need a low profile Raspberry Pi microSD card adaptor?

Compare Rpi regularadapter.jpg with Rpi withlowprofile sd.jpg

We can clearly see that the low profile one fits right into the PCB of Raspberry pi while the regular SD adapter protrudes.
